I grew up with one of these on the old Greybishop family patch, and while gorgeous in the Spring, it's possibly the worst Fall yard rake/driveway scrape you can imagine.
I've taken a few shots to give you a sense of just how glorious these trees are before they fruit.
I don't know what they're called, but I'm told they're a weed.
Don't care. I think they're purty.
And finally, the flower I have the most success in cultivating.

Your dandelion is stunning, GB! You have a gift....
:-)
I just stumbled over here and see you are still posting here; or was this last post?
Middle flower: Dicentra (bleeding heart. What is a weed?).
Last FLOWER! Dandelion greens are sold in our stores. Add them to your salad; make dandelion wine with the flowers; roast the root and make a coffee substitute (poor dandelion. A weed!).
Nice dandelion. I always liked them. A field of yellow flowers in the spring is pretty.
As for crabapple trees, there were several in my neighborhood growing up. I ran into one once and almost lost an eye.
Speaking of fruit trees, before my grapefruit tree died, the woodpeckers would come and drill perfect little holes in the fruit. These would attract bugs, which would attract even more birds, especially warblers. It's a good thing I liked bird watching more than grapefruit.
We had a crabapple tree in our front yard growing up. It is a gorgeous tree...pre-fruit bearing.
As for dandelions, the fun part is when they turn white and you blow all the little seeds off the stem (and then Papa Bean freaks out cuz there will now be a great harvest of dandelions in his perfectly manicured lawn).
Nothing spectacular about the mighty cottonwood tree, except they drop little pea pod looking thingies and since there were no child labor laws at my ripe age of 8ish, I was sent to the back yard to fill up ~10 bags of those stinkin' pea pods before the pods could open and then little seeds would blow all over and try to mature into trees.
And one last tidbit on trees/vegetation...never EVER move to a house that is within 500 yards of a box elder tree. Anyone who has ever lived near one knows what I mean.
Hey guys!
To answer Sawsee's question, the PHII has NO effect on the blog. While I might have a bit of trouble deciding where to post (like science stuff, since I can now post pictures and links in the PHII) I fully intend to maintain this space.
I might cross post from time to time and I still need a space for my projects, recaps and kitty pics!
