It just wouldn't happen in real life, right? Young people don't ride around solving mysteries in the real world.
Unless they do.

Roseville, California, September 30, 2019. Glenneta Belford, 97, goes missing. She suffers from dementia, is largely non-verbal and is known to hide from searchers. The local police announce her situation on Facebook and from loudspeakers in the area.
Cue the meddling kids. Four local youths, aged 10 to 11 hop on their bikes and search for this lost lady all afternoon. One even suffers some scrapes and bruises from the effort. At dinner time, they head home, get some first aid for the minor injuries, eat dinner and head right back out to continue searching.

After more than two hours of searching, our heroes spot the lost senior. They call 911, waiting around with her to make sure the first responders find her safely. A few minutes later, all's well that ends well and it's goldfish cookies in the treehouse to celebrate.
Seriously, that's actually what they did - these kids are my kind of junior detectives!
So yeah, a gang of teenagers traveling around in a van solving mysteries probably wouldn't happen in the real world.
It takes a gang of kids on bikes, with the huge hearts of heroes, for the story to be realistic.
Things could have ended much worse if not for those pedalling kids.
If only they had a dog...
