Kneel Beside Zod!

So tonight I watched the last (and most recent) Superman live action dvd in my collection.

Henry Cavill goes on to play Big Blue in Batman V Superman and Justice League.  We'll actually see him in Justice League again soon, once the "Snyder Cut" is released.  None of those is strictly a "Superman" standalone, so Man of Steel is chronologically the latest Superman project.

Barring Covid related delays, we'll see a new Superman series from the CW next year but to me, Cavill really is this generation's Superman.  A lot of fans have problems with Man of Steel, particularly centered around the neck snapping denouement.  Me?  I'm perfectly fine with it.

Kneel Beside Zod's...Corpse

Sure, Supes isn't supposed to kill, like, ever.  That's the code we've always associated with the character.  Honestly though, in that moment, after an epic battle, knowing that Zod would never, NEVER stop his super-powered revenge assault on humanity, if I live in that world I'm SUPER rooting for the neck snap.

Again!  Again!

Imagine literally any other action hero character in that same situation.  No one would blink at James Bond, Sherlock Holmes, Tarzan or Mad Max doing exactly what Superman did.  In most cases, the theater would erupt with unanimous cheering.  We might be shocked if say Batman or Thor did it but I doubt it would raise as much debate and online outrage as we saw when this movie came out.  Like I say, if I live in that Metropolis and I've just watched Zod's forces level the city and it's obvious that he's just warming up, I'm morally, ethically and personally just fine with the one guy who can kill him doing just that.

Anyhow, the other thing is that this movie just ROCKS.  No Superman movie (including the two aforementioned Cavill vehicles) looks, feels or moves the way this one does.  Superman saves the world and by the time the credits roll, it really feels like he did just that.

I am not a fan of the Jonathan Kent in this one, nor a big fan of Amy Adams' Lois and I would have loved to hear a little strain of the Williams score at least once, but the overall take away is one of breathless, giddy fanboy joy.  I really love this one.

Oh and thank you Mr. Snyder for FINALLY ditching the ridiculous Kryptonian crystal architecture in favour of something that actually looks advanced, not just shiny.  Of all the stuff that doesn't hold up from the Christopher Reeve movies, that awful, ugly, boring crystal crap was the WORST.
