...for the directors.
Did linear storytelling frighten you as children?
I'm a big fan of this sort of tale. Fantasy, swords, sorceresses, monsters and even a dragon or two. When I can follow what the hell is going on...
Unfortunately, while I am (with difficulty) following the narrative leaps, the time jumping story is headache inducing. It's particularly annoying when it is quite obviously a story that could be told in a simple straight line and be at least as effective. The back and forth chronology is simply unnecessary.
Flashbacks are fine in visual storytelling but when the characters look EXACTLY the same in the past and the present, it's kinda tough to follow. A simple "XX years ago" title card for the flashback scenes would solve the problem neatly since we're dealing with many characters who are actually "ageless". Without title cards, jumping back and forth in time really only works if characters are obviously older/younger in various scenes, a narrative convention this show seems totally unaware of.
A pretty entertaining show, The Witcher would benefit from a dose of simplification. With any luck, they'll straighten out the kinks in season two and beyond.
