How I Spent My Holidays...

This past week was that rarest of beasts, an entire week off from work.

I would have dearly loved to spend a week with my feet up on the couch, munching on chips and pop and catching up on a few new DVDs in my collection.  While I did a bit of that (probably more than I should have) I spent most days finishing the reno in the kitchen and laying and pouring a brand new comic book floor in the bathroom.

I realize that I haven't posted pix of the kitchen floor yet, so you'll find a nice shot of the whole project below.  The large black areas frame some lovely Frank Frazetta artwork and the rest are all real comic book covers from my personal collection.  I decided on a glass table and ghost chairs (knock offs! the real thing are WAY too expensive) to show off the floor.  I'll be forever grateful to whoever invented Etsy for the curtains, the dishwasher magnets and my Spider-Man paper towel holder.

My term for this: Geek-chic.
Pronounced "Geek Sheek" FYI.  Or: "Holy crap that's cool!" if you prefer.

I still have a few little things left to do in this room, but nothing you're going to notice in a picture this size.  I'll be customizing all the cabinet handles with comic book panels and there's a few bubbles that didn't pop properly in the big pour that I have to sand and patch.  I'll also be building a nifty model to sit on that frosted glass shelf under the table.  I may also remove more cabinet doors to display more comic book nick-nacks above the sink.

As for the bathroom, there's just a couple of bubbles to sand and patch, along with baseboards to install and some artwork to hang.  Not quite a fait accompli, but a pretty good looking room in my opinion.

For 20 years I have hated the tile box the previous owner built around my tub.

That little wall under the DC Comics shower curtain is part of the hated tile box around my tub.  It was alternating blue and burnt orange tiles and more than once I though about taking a hammer to it.  I spent about half a day cutting and gluing comic book panels over the burnt orange tiles.  On the day I poured the floor, I mixed a small amount of epoxy first and brushed it on the tiles and comic book panels.  The final result was a glowing, lustrous custom comic book tile wall that looks AMAZING.  Now it's my favourite feature in the whole house!

I also plan some cool comic book shelves in that weird little corner on the right.

Magic Resin has quite literally transformed two rooms in my house.  Along with the Star Wars powder room (resin floor by that other company) my home is well on the way to being one grand testament to my true self.  So much awesome in one place!

There's more yet to come but not for a while.  I plan to use the winter months to finalize everything I've got done and/or underway.  New projects will wait until Spring, at this point.

Feel free to express your jealousy (or abject horror if geek-chic doesn't do it for you) in the comments.  I still "squeeee" every once in a while, myself.
