A Non-Spoiler Thought About Avengers - Endgame

So I've had a minute or two to digest and think on this.

There are a bunch of things that on reflection are problematic about it.  Spoilers all.  And to be honest, I'm still unpacking my feelings and thoughts on the various "hmm, that's a problem" things that we got in Endgame.

One thing, not a spoiler, really rings clear for me though.

They called it "Endgame" and that may well be exactly what it is.  It made over a BILLION dollars in the first three days in theaters.  That's not record breaking, that's EPIC.  The previous Avengers film took a swift 11 days to hit a billion and it was the fastest off the mark until now.  It's equivalent to someone running a 90 second mile by comparison.  Seriously big money and seriously fast.

What was that non-spoiler I was thinking of?  This might well be the last film to do this kind of money in the super-hero genre.

I'm not saying that super-hero films are done.  But.  Something in me says, at least for a while, we're about to see a trough after this ridiculous peak.  Not necessarily a bad thing, but I thing that the "super-hero fatigue" crowd might finally get it right.  They've been saying it for years but somehow this time I'm feeling them.

All film genres peak and trough.  Westerns, sci-fi epics, horror, fantasy and currently super-heroes have all been box office king at various times and when they take a back seat, they don't disappear but reset and regroup.  Some of the best genre films have come out when those genres were out of vogue and that will be true for the super-hero epic too.

Sure, there's a slew of these in the pipeline (Black Widow, Suicide Squad, Spider-Man, a Doctor Strange sequel, Aquaman 2, Wonder Woman 1984 and on and on) but I think the crown is going to pass elsewhere.  Maybe not immediately or blatantly but I think the time for a box office not ruled by super-heroes is on the horizon.  As a geek of the first and original order, I'm not hoping for it but the realist in me really felt this film was era ending.  I think we'll look back on 2019 as the capstone.

Rest assured, there are always going to be super-heroes in cinemas, pretty much from now on but I think that their current dominance is going to wind down from now forward.  I hope to be proven wrong and will happily eat my words when I am.
