I Just Needed To Share My Reaction...

...to the most depressing takeaway from the recent record breaking expedition to the deepest part of our ocean.  A single human being travelled to the deepest part of our planet's ocean, the Marianas Trench, some 35,000 feet below the surface.

Wow.  That's truly amazing.

So, what was the big takeaway?  Some new fish, some amazing insight into geology or oceanography?  Some really cool engineering feat?  I'm sure all of those were involved, but none of them really made the news.  So what did?

A plastic bag.

At the deepest place on the entire planet.  Somewhere we can only go at ridiculous risk and expense.  Somewhere that should be safe from the depredations of human beings.

A plastic fucking bag.  The most ubiquitous piece of trash we have.  I'm not what anyone would call an environmentalist and while I'm usually happy to argue about most things I generally stay away from getting to vocal about the environment.  I just don't know enough to be a strong debater on the subject.  I do, however, know one thing on the subject and it happens to be the same thing that was my reaction to the picture of that bag on the ocean floor.

We suck.
