My excitement level is through the damned roof!
About what, you ask.
This year will see the 4th crossover of some or all of the various CW airing DC Comics properties.
They started with "Invasion!" which introduced Supergirl to all the boys and girls she had joined on CW when she was shifted over from CBS. It aired over all four of the then airing shows, but only for a moment on Supergirl at the very end of an episode and then full on crossover on The Flash, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow. Epic and for a tv show set of budgets pretty damned impressive.
The following year they did "Crisis on Earth X" which had the entire line of CW heroes plus a couple of new ones vs. a world full of Nazis. They had evil doppelgangers of Supergirl, Arrow and Flash and it was pretty damned fun.
Last year they went with "Elseworlds" which is also the name of a little corner of DC that does "what might have or could happen" stories like Batman in Victorian Gotham tracking Jack the Ripper. The Elseworlds on CW crossed Flash, Arrow and Supergirl into a version of Gotham City where we were introduced to Batwoman who will now get her own show this year.
This year? I think it might be THE big one. The now annual crossover event will air over 5 nights:
Sunday December 8 (Supergirl), Monday December 9 (Batwoman) and Tuesday December 10 (The Flash). They'll then take a holiday break and return Tuesday January 14 (Arrow) and finish up with a "Special Episode" of Legends of Tomorrow on the same night. It's a "Special Episode" because it will air before the official premier of the show, not because White Canary gets pregnant or Atom has a drug problem...
Anyhow, here are the various things I've heard and as they keep announcing them I keep getting more and more excited. The guy who plays The Monitor will also play "The Anti-Monitor", another virtually omnipotent cosmic being from the DC stable of over the top villains I love. Then we found out Tyler Hoechlin will return as the Superman we've already met in the CW-Verse but he won't be the only Superman! Brandon Routh who plays Ray Palmer/The Atom on Legends will also be playing a version of Superman! Routh famously took up the big "S" in 2006 in Superman Returns. Not my favourite Superman film but Routh was fine in the uniform and character so that announcement got my attention. But wait! That's not all!
Black Lightning has been a sort of entity unto itself until now. No hint of crossover stuff and other than once having the mother tell one of her daughters that she wasn't "Supergirl" there's been little indication that BL had any connection to the wider DC universe. Until now. It's been confirmed that Black Lightning and the rest of the CWDCU will meet in one way or another during this year's looming "Crisis" 5 parter! Yes!
And then! Burt Ward, he of green speedo and pixie boots back in his days as Robin to Adam West's Batman will be guest starring in an unrevealed role. Burt Ward back in a Batman connected role! I did NOT see that coming. And there's STILL more!
Today the CW announced something I NEVER thought I'd see happen. Anyone who's read me for more than a minute knows that in my opinion, Kevin Conroy is BAR NONE the BEST actor to EVER portray Batman in any medium. For decades now, Conroy has voiced the Dark Knight in animation and video game releases. His voice is easily the most identifiable version of the character in history, at least for serious Batman fans. Turns out, the CW might just be Batman fans. They're bringing Conroy on to play a version of Bruce Wayne from the future. Conroy already played an elderly Bruce Wayne in Batman Beyond which places the familiar characters a few decades forward in time to an era of flying cars and such. I'm not sure how they'll use Conroy in the crossover event but somehow, someway Kevin Conroy is going to play (at least) Bruce Wayne in a live action scenario! I honestly never thought that would EVER happen and I'm more than a little excited about it!
