Tom Swift. Straight Outta My Childhood...

A while back, the CW premiered a new Nancy Drew incarnation.

I gave it a shot.

A few minutes in, Nancy Drew is shown gettin' busy with...

At that point, I decided I preferred to keep my innocent memories of reading my cousin's Nancy Drews when I ran out of Hardy Boys to read intact and changed the channel.  I'm no prude, at all, but some things just need to remain untouched by the reality of...reality.  The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew will forever be kids in their early teens, solving mysteries and cracking codes.  It's an image frozen in amber and I like it that way.

Fast forward a couple of years or so and I find out that their spinning off Tom Swift from Nancy Drew.  My Dad was old school and hunted up a couple of Tom Swift books that helped ignite my lifelong sci-fi love affair.  To be honest, I hardly recall much beyond (I think) blue hard covers about the same size as the Hardy Boys books I loved and the fact that Swift was an inventor and adventurer, but I definitely remember them.

The CW has chosen to remake Swift as a Black, gay character and I'm fine with that and pretty much any other change they want to make.  As I say, I hardly recall the character but for a vague notion that he was (I think) a blonde.  I'm also fine with seeing this hazily remembered childhood figure get busy.  Again, I'm no prude and this character is hardly emblematic of my childhood, so go nuts.

What's odd is that I've seen this rumour for a while now and as I say it was confirmed today.  In all those articles, not once has a reporter mentioned that the character comes from a book series that existed around the same time as the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew were published originally.  It's not a super important point given how obscure a character we're dealing with, but it is weird.

Another CW show that I shall give a shot to.  I might even have to hunt up the Nancy Drew episode or episodes that introduce the character.  Hopefully she keeps her pants on this time.
