Maybe it's the current mood of our culture. Maybe I'm just noticing more as I age. Maybe we're just a little braver every year and feel less need to view the past through rose coloured glasses.
Whatever the reason may be I find myself in deeper admiration of Jackie Robinson every year this date rolls around. I have VERY few heroes and generally think that putting historical figures on that pedestal is more often than not is a huge mistake. Jackie Robinson is one of the few exceptions to that rule that I am totally comfortable with. The man was a hero. Full stop.
Superb athlete? Sure.
Historic achiever? Absolutely.
All the accolades he received today and historically are well deserved and well earned. No question.
For me, a personal hero.
Most importantly, Jackie Robinson was a great man at a time when our culture needed a great man.
Come to think of it, we could use a man like him now.
