Watch The Birdies!

An industrious, if somewhat crooked, robin built its nest atop my back porch light this year.  I was initially worried that the nest would fall since it's got a significant offset from the top of the light.  It's lasted this long, so I guess the little architect got it right.

There was a false start as momma robin dropped two eggs in early spring, only for them to totally disappear a week or so later.  Not sure what happened, but nature is nothing if not persistent.  About a month later, there were three new eggs in the nest.  I assume it's the same momma robin, but she doesn't carry a wallet so I can't be certain.

Some time between June 5 and June 9, we lost an egg, but two of the little critters hatched just fine.

The little robins aren't pretty, but they are beautiful in my eyes.

8 days on, they've got some feathers and look more like birds than they did last week.

Just one day later it looks like they're putting on some serious weight.  That nest is looking pretty cramped.

The internet tells me that they should fledge in another 4 or 5 days, sticking around the nest for a couple of weeks after their first flight.

Nature is all around us and a wonder to behold.  Even if some of the babies start out kinda ugly...
