I am not ashamed to admit that of all the celebrity deaths that have happened in the course of my life, the news of the loss of Kevin Conroy has hit me harder than any before. I really loved this guy and everything I've read about him today just confirms that he was a truly good man as well as a great talent. That's a rare combination and something to be mourned in its passing.
I spent this evening with Batman and my memories and love of the character. Conroy's Batman did more to elevate the character than just giving him a cool, gravelly voice. He made him human. Episodes of Batman - The Animated Series delved into the childhood traumas AND joys that helped form the Batman as a character, explored his relationships with friends and family like no other version of the character has ever done and humanized him without diminishing him.
I leave you this sad night with a treat. In an episode of Justice League, Batman must make a deal with the sorceress, Circe, to free Wonder Woman from a curse. Her price is to have him sing "Am I Blue" on stage. Sadly, in the episode we only get about half the song but Kevin Conroy recorded the whole thing and posted it and a couple of other songs here.
After a little editing to add a nice image, I am able to give you this:
I hope you enjoy it.
Thank you so much, Kevin. You brought me a great deal of joy and I only wish I could have thanked you in person for it.
