So, here's a thing you likely don't know about me but you might have been able to guess it, had you thought about it.
I talk to myself.
I spend a good deal of time solo and as a result (or perhaps it's the cause?) of that, I talk to myself. A lot.
One of my most chatty times is when I'm in my car. I talk to an imaginary audience all the time. I'm a frustrated teacher/lecturer/radio host/guru and it bubbles up while I drive.
If you have followed my online exploits over the years, you may remember a time that I was employed by a website of note to recap television and at one point I reviewed movies there too. Not a long run, granted, but one that happened.
From that time to now, I have a tendency to spend the drive home from the theater talking about the movie I just saw as a way to organize my thoughts about it, for a review that nobody is paying me to do.
As I pulled in to the driveway this evening after finally getting a chance to see Shazam!, I was still talking about the movie. When I saw Captain Marvel last month, I had already changed topics by that same point. Just my little barometer of how much I enjoyed whatever film I just saw.
Was Captain Marvel slicker, prettier and obviously going to be more financially successful? Yes on all counts.
And yet, despite not liking the costume, still not being sold on the dude in said costume and not usually being a big fan of the "light" super-hero type movie, I gotta say I enjoyed Shazam! more than Captain Marvel.
Personally, Shazam is a B+ while I'd give Captain Marvel a solid B. I'm way, way in the minority here, obviously. Brie Larson's super-hero debut has a billion in the rear view and Shazam! ain't gonna touch it. I would love to see the Big Red Cheese prove me wrong here, but even with a great villain, an impressive cast of young talent and the freshest take on what it really means to be a super-hero since the first Iron Man movie, I am almost sure it won't happen.
As usual, I'm just talking to myself...
