I Knew That Seemed Familiar

So I wasn't impressed with Loki.

One of the main plot points revolves around the TVA which is the Time Variant Authority.  The TVA is a very dreary looking bureaucratic institution that polices the timeline for "variants" that occur when a person somehow does something outside of their predestined actions in "The Sacred Timeline".  So many problems with this.  Let's look at the two most obvious ones:

First, time travel.  All time travel that plays out in a television series eventually runs up against one of two brick walls.  I've talked about this before but it can stand to be repeated.  If tv show time travellers can and do affect events in history (even a fictional history like the Marvel Cinematic Universe), eventually they live in a reality so different from the one we actually live in that the show needs to spend more time explaining reality than actually living in it.  If the tv show time travellers really cannot affect anything they encounter in history, no matter how creative the show tries to be it's basically showing the viewer what they already know.  This is why time travel should only ever be a mcguffin in movies, since the capsule format is easier to swallow and allows for mistakes and paradoxes to be ignored in the short format.

Second and in this case more damning.  This was done in a super hero tv show just a couple of years ago and done with more style and panache.  The Umbrella Academy season 1 had a bland bureaucratic institution at its core, The Commission, that protects The Timeline by finding and killing anyone who might endanger it.  The only real difference seems to be not calling it "The Sacred Timeline".  Quite honestly I enjoyed Hazel and Cha-Cha FAR more than Loki and whats-his-name.

Seriously.  Marvel goes to the trouble of creating a tv series about the most beloved villain in the MCU, a character who isn't just a god but the god of mischief, and the best they can do is riff on The Umbrella Academy?  In a buddy cop show, no less.  Weak.

I could write a better Loki vehicle on my way home from work.

I'd keep the Girl Loki.

And Alligator Loki.
