Birds of Prey actress Jurnee Smollett might just be returning as Black Canary in the near-ish future.
The word on the interwebs this day is that Lovecraft Country show-runner Misha Green is going to be writing on an upcoming Black Canary project starring Smollett. I've raved about Lovecraft Country and Jurnee Smollett's super impressive turn on the show, so this news has me pretty stoked.
Smollett sang her own songs in BoP.
Smollett wasn't as amazing in Birds of Prey as she was in the much more front and center role of Letitia Fucking Lewis in Lovecraft Country, but I put that down to the nature of an ensemble behind a star like Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. I fully anticipate that a Jurnee Smollett Black Canary movie (or possibly series, the information is sketchy as yet) would showcase her impressive talent and that she'll be more than up to the challenge.
While I still mourn the never-to-be season 2 of Lovecraft Country, this is a pretty good silver lining!
One request for Green and the writer's room. At some point, I want to hear "My name's not 'girl'. It's Black Fucking Canary!"
