...but I'm TOTALLY sold on one element of the newest CW show based on a DC property.
I've never read a Naomi comic and to be honest I know exactly nothing about the character or her mythology. Watching the first episode I'm still on the fence right up to the last scene. That's when that one element I mentioned comes into play.
A little non-Naomi history to set this up.
One of my very favourite DC heroes is Hawkman. He's got the most fluid backstory of any character and somehow still ends up a badass in every version. He's been an archaeologist, a reincarnated Egyptian prince, an alien, an alien cop and often two or more of those at a time. He usually works best when they write him as a sort of Conan in space...with wings!
He's usually a guy named Carter Hall or Katar Hol or some similar variant. As a general from Thanagar, the Justice League Animated series anagramed him to Hro Talak and made him the leader of the Thanagarian invasion force. The key bit there is the planet Thanagar. Part of that Naomi show I started talking about at the beginning...
Live action wise, not a ton of Hawkman hours have been logged, but he's actually had several live action portrayals.
First up, way back in the 70s (I saw this when it first aired, so you know it's a long time ago...) there was this dude:
I mean, dude is JACKED. But that mask! And are those wings macrame? I know it was big in the 70s but seriously.
That's little known actor Bill Nuckols under that paper mache grade school art class mask. Seriously, dude is JACKED.
Thirty years would go by before we'd see another live action dude in the wings.
That's best known for Stargate actor Michael Shanks playing Hawkman. He looks pretty good and while I doubt he could go peck to peck with Nuckols, he has superhero-ish arms. But the wings. Ugh. Gone is the macrame only to be replaced by a really shitty looking feather...thing.
A decade and a bit later, the CW gave us a pair of Hawk people:
Ciar Renee as Hawkgirl and Falk Hentschel as Hawkman. They look okay but again, those wings. They just look...off...
Anyhow, in all of these examples the character is more reincarnated Egyptian with little or no reference to the planet Thanagar.
So now you're up to speed.
That element at the end of episode 1 of Naomi? Spoiler alert...
No. Seriously.
Okay. You've been warned.
I'm sure I telegraphed it, but I hate spoilers, so if you go any further....
It's a Thanagarian!
So far, he's a tattoo artist named "Dee" and claims to be Thanagarian. Not much Egyptian or reincarnated about him that I can see. Doesn't seem like a cop either.
But those WINGS! Finally, they got it right. That's a look that says "Conan in space...with wings!"
I have no idea if Naomi will be good or not, but two episodes in, I'm still watching and considering that I have no interest or connection with the character beyond her being a DC Comics character, that's probably a good sign.
