James Gunn Ruins Chistmas and Possibly DC Comics

When it was announced that James Gunn and Peter Safran had been put in charge of the DC Comics movie and film division at the reorganized Warner Brothers Discovery, I was happy enough.  I enjoyed The Suicide Squad which they collaborated on and the idea of one (okay, two) voice(s) directing the plan seemed like a good idea.

Then I watched the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

I remember now that I'm not a James Gunn fan.

I disliked the first Guardians movie, was even less impressed with number two.  If they weren't part of the Marvel deal, I'd never have watched either.  I like Rocket and Groot well enough but the rest you could chuck out an airlock and I'd be fine with it.  Start with Chris Pratt, please.

Pom Klementieff and Dave Bautista's Mantis and Drax are supposed to be charming in their misunderstanding of human holiday tradition, but for me it was just painful to watch them chew the kitschy Christmas scenery.  It seems almost cruel to put actors through hours of make-up to deliver such poorly written cheese.  There's no heart, no soul and no depth in any of the main cast's performances, unless you count a fun couple of moments with Rocket and Cosmo the telekinetic dog.

While I sorta enjoyed the Kevin Bacon bits (see what I did there?) in the special, the rest is just awful.

I am now honestly more worried about the future of DC Comics on film than I was when the recent implosion at WBDiscovery started.
