One of the best things on television in the last year or so was the HBO adaptation of Matt Ruff's novel, Lovecraft Country. Adapted by Misha Green, it married Lovecraftian horror to the very real horror of the overt racism faced by African Americans in the 1950s. It wasn't shy about pointedly paralleling current events with its fantasy/horror story line and it did it very, very well. Acting, writing, direction and effects on the show were ALL top notch and I was super excited for a season 2 and beyond.
Looks like that won't be happening. I'm not sure exactly what misfired, but it was announced today that HBO and Green have agreed not to move forward on a new season. It might be that without the foundation of a novel to work from (season 1 adapted the novel and Ruff hasn't penned a sequel) there just wasn't the story to tell. Perhaps it was too expensive or difficult to produce a period piece on the HBO budget, or maybe HBO just didn't really like it. I have no idea.
I do know that I liked it and would have loved to see the series continue and that's from a guy who generally doesn't like horror movies or shows. It was that good.
If you haven't seen it, the first and only season is out on that ancient device, the DVD. Even if it is just the one season, worth picking up in my opinion. I got mine.
